The Rev. William Sloan Coffin writes that

Fundamentalists, on the other hand, cannot bear uncertainty. They indulge in what psychiatrists call ‘premature closure.” … Liberals contend that one of the most wonderful things about life is to act wholeheartedly without absolute certainty. El seu fill, Fernando Sainz Moreno, recorda un dia de 1996 a una clínica en la que el mestre reconeixia la fi de la realització del seu projecte vital, una idea tan estimada per ell, arrelada a la filosofia d’Ortega y Gasset, i del seu amic Julián Marías. I no he pogut evitar el record d’aquell 80è aniversari del pare, el 23 de febrer de 2007, aquí, a Cal Cua, al menjador, quan el seu brindis va ser la declaració de que el seu projecte vital havia culminat. I ara ho entenc: ¡Ortega! Les obres completes d’Ortega han presidit el saló del pis de Cavallers des de sempre. Ortega fou per a molta gent el viaró de sortida de l’ integrisme catòlic.

Entre las reflexiones expuestas, la distinción entre la simple ignorancia (lo que no conocemos), la ignorancia deseada (lo que nos imponemos a nosotros mismos no saber) y la alta ignorancia (la aceptación racional de cuanto no sabemos).

To be a liberal according to my favorite scripture, Merriam-Webster, is be open minded, is to be free from the constraints of dogmatism and authority, is to be generous and to believe in the basic goodness of humankind. Religion is defined as that which binds us back or reconnects us to that which is ultimately important. Thus religious liberals are those that are connected, through generosity and openness, to the most important aspects of life. And there in lies the challenge. If we are open minded and not bound by authority who or what decides those matters of ultimate importance?
