Algunos viejos compañeros de pupitre que jamás mostraron apego ni por la cultura ni por la religión dan la imagen de haber envejecido mal. Siguen alejados de la cultura, pero se han refugiado en la religión con desespero, con una adhesión acrítica que bordea el integrismo. Desconocen el significado de la autonomía moral. Y lanzan hacia nosostros un grito terrible: ¡malditos intelectuales! El insulto preferido de los bárbaros, llamar a alguien intelectual. Se dan la mano los totalitarismos, desde el nacional-catolicismo hasta el maoísmo: el enemigo es el intelectual. Viven encadenados a los dogmas que prohíben pensar y, por algún extraño complejo de inferioridad, no soportan que los demás piensen. Ovejas de un rebaño, obedecen al pastor en cuanto les silba, y han substituido una parte de su pensamiento por simple catecismo. Permanentes menores de edad… No aspiro ni deseo que me den la razón -defiendo su libertad de ser como son, a pesar de lo que les cuesta aceptar como soy-, me contentaría con que tuvieran las luces suficientes para mantener un diálogo entre adultos.

To be a liberal according to my favorite scripture, Merriam-Webster, is be open minded, is to be free from the constraints of dogmatism and authority, is to be generous and to believe in the basic goodness of humankind. Religion is defined as that which binds us back or reconnects us to that which is ultimately important. Thus religious liberals are those that are connected, through generosity and openness, to the most important aspects of life. And there in lies the challenge. If we are open minded and not bound by authority who or what decides those matters of ultimate importance?
